DEAR ABBY: The pandemic has put a strain on relationships. Last year, I lost my best friend of 40 years over the COVID vaccines. I believe the vaccine helps to keep me safe, as well as helps my family and friends. This friend decided he and his family would not take the jab. He quit his job rather than get vaccinated. This caused a rift so wide that, in his eyes, he and his family could not continue being friends with our family. I’m sad about it.

A man was put under for a medical procedure. When he awoke, he asked the nurse attending him, “Is it all over, am I okay?” She assured him that yes, it was over, he was just fine and all was well. He then said, “Oh, good. Tell me, will I be able to play the piano?” To which she replied, “Oh, of course you will!” With a groggy impish grin came his answer, “Wow! I’m glad, cause I never could before!”

DEAR ABBY: My husband passed away four months ago, after battling cancer for years. He declined in a month, and we chose hospice at home. (I did not find them particularly caring or helpful.) This was even more depressing because it happened during COVID.

We are quickly approaching the time in the legislative session where our focus turns to finalizing the state budget. Constitutionally, crafting a balanced budget is the only requirement of the Legislature each year. Unlike the federal government, the state cannot spend more money than revenues brought in each year, so we spend a great deal of time ensuring our state’s core services are adequately funded with the monies available.

DEAR ABBY: I reconnected with an old flame, “Ollie,” eight years ago. We would see each other and catch up during a weekly event he hosted. We’re both married with kids. We kept it non-physical but connected emotionally. We chatted every day and confessed our attraction to each other while still not engaging in anything more than our weekly encounters among friends.
