His family moved to Seminole County, where he was brought up and attended the old Butner schools. He joined the United States Marine Corps at the age of 17 and served for two years in Japan and China. He married Ellen Joyce Lowe on June 12, 1951, in Van Buren, Arkansas. He worked in the oil field and at the glass plant in Henryetta.

She worked as a manager in the bakery and deli at Homeland before retiring in 2013.
